Our fishing partner Jason Klein and I had spent last weekend fishing for muskellunge, smallmouth and crappie on the lakes in Vilas County. Klein’s father Jack, who lives in Presque Isle, was at the helm of a three-seater seaplane on Sunday as Jason and I set off for smallmouth on a 4-mile stretch of the Manitowish River just south of Mercer. Our thoughts on the trip focused on finding fish, not clinging to trees and watching for sandbanks that might temporarily stop our boat.
But Monday’s trip to the Menominee River, while also focusing on the smallmouth, included a discussion of the mine, the future of the river, and the summer quarry of Stelzer, who works as a guide for Tight Lines Fly Fishing Co. . based in De Pere. The company, which has offered tours since 2001, runs several floats per day on an 80-mile stretch of the river and has been working to promote the resource and bring attention to the proposed mine.
In 2020, a film crew from MeatEater, which produces the Netflix show “Das Boot,” accompanied Tight Lines owner Tim Landwehr on a descent down the river. Footage that was not used in the episode was incorporated into a short film that was part of the 2021 Fly Fishing Film Nationwide Tour.
