The best places to surf in Phuket
Phuket is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream because there are so many places to explore and swim. And for surfers, it offers beautiful waves to catch with its epic beaches. Here we have the best places to surf in Phuket for your consideration below.
The best places to surf in Phuket
1. Kata beach
Known as the best place to surf in Phuket, Kata Beach has the best waves. Located at the south end near Boathouse station, surfers will find waves to catch at any tide level. However, the best conditions for surfing at Kata Beach are when the ocean is at half tide. Additionally, surfers of all skill levels can enjoy the waves here, which makes Kata Beach very popular for this particular water sport. You can also rent a surfboard from a few beach shops and take a lesson at one of the surf schools.
2. Nai Harn
Nai Harn is a more laid back beach that caters to a crowd of local surfers. The waves are decently distributed between half a meter and 3 meters of swell at the ends of the beach. The northern end has a reef near The Nai Harn complex. In addition, the southern end (near the lagoon), includes a permanent sandbank that allows longer and faster rides on the waves. The waves at Nai Harn are ideal for beginner to intermediate surfers as they are quieter. And, be sure to rent a board elsewhere or bring your own as there is no surfboard rental here. Plus, it might be the best place to try surfing and see if you’d be interested in some water sport. This is due to the fact that the beach does not offer surf lessons, which makes it ideal for those who are already qualified or those who just want to test the waters.
3. Kata Noi
This small bay is separated from Kata Yai Beach (or Kata Main Beach) by a promontory. At its northern end there are certainly some good waves to catch, but be careful because they are faster and more powerful than those of Kata Yai. If you’re looking to stay here to surf, you can check out the Katathani Resort. Here you can stay right on the beach and surf at your leisure. Kata Noi doesn’t offer surf lessons, but you can easily venture out to Kata Main Beach for lessons and board rentals.
4. Kamala Beach
Kamala is a popular beach for surfing as it offers waves for all skill levels. Plus, it includes consistent breaks and a sheltered bay. Surfable waves can be found at many places along the beach, the best being at the north end. For advanced surfers, the south end is a great place because it has a point break. Surf shops are available at Kamala Beach where you can rent a board. Also, for those who want to be able to take a nice break while finding something to do on Kamala Beach, there are definitely a few restaurants here. The Cafe del Mar beach club is a popular place to relax while taking a break after surfing.
5. Kalim Beach
This lesser-known beach is a great little spot for surfing. The rocky promontory is just north of Patong Beach and features waves that can reach 3 meters high. In addition, a shallow coral reef on the right offers long waves of 50 to 100 meters. Kalim is suitable for more skilled surfers as it has exposed rocks at low tide which could be dangerous. Thus, it is better to go there at mid-tide or at high tide. Although Kalim does not have a board rental nearby, you can surely walk to Patong Beach to find a board to rent.
Surfing is not for everyone, but those who love to ride the waves swear by it. These beaches above are the best for finding bigger waves, while some even offer surf lessons. And, for those who just want to experience this fun water sport, there are plenty of beaches suitable for beginners!
