BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police said on Monday an autopsy performed on the body of Australian cricket star Shane Warne concluded he died of natural causes.
A statement issued by Deputy National Police Spokesperson Kissana Pathanacharoen said the opinion of the doctor who performed the autopsy was conveyed to Warne’s family and the Australian Embassy. He said the family were in no doubt the 52-year-old cricketer, widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest bowlers, died of natural causes.
The statement, released ahead of a scheduled police press conference, did not specify the cause of death. Preliminary assessments by Thai authorities suggest that Warne died of a heart attack.
Warne was found unconscious in his hotel room on the Thai island of Samui on Friday and could not be revived at a nearby hospital. His body was transferred to the Thai mainland on Sunday for an official autopsy at a government hospital.
The statement said police will conclude the autopsy report and send it to the prosecutor’s office as soon as possible, standard procedure in the event of an unexpected death.
There was no immediate information on when Warne’s body would be sent home to Australia.
