SC surfers Autumn Hays and Sam Coffey take 13th place at Ron Jon Pro events in Florida
Santa Cruz’s Autumn Hays is tied for 13th at the World Surf League’s Ron Jon Roxy Pro, a women’s 1,000-point qualifying event at Shepard Beach Park in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Hays, No. 12 in the North America Women’s QS Rankings, earned 295 points and $200 for her arrival on Friday.
She posted a 5.70 in two waves in 1-4ft conditions to take fourth place in her Round of 16 heat. second to also qualify for the quarter-finals. Number 21 Sara Freyre (8.90) took third in the heat and tied for ninth overall.
Hays (6.20) took second place behind Leilani McGonagle (11.75) of Costa Rica in the round of 16. Lisa Andersen (5.65) and Lilie Kulber (0.00) were eliminated.
Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller is tied for 17th after taking third in her round of 32 with an 8.80 total. She got 200 points for her finish. Miller finished behind Sage Erickson (17.00), who posted the best score in two heats of the round, and Freyre (12.15). Talia Swindal (6.75) took fourth in the heat and was also eliminated.
Santa Cruz’s Esme Brigham is tied for 25th after finishing fourth in her 32nd round with a 5.65 total. This total was not due to a lack of effort as she attempted to ride 10 waves. Alyssa Spencer (14.50), ranked No. 1 on the QS, won the heat and Chiasa Maruyama (11.00) took second place to qualify.
Brigham got 150 points for his finish.
Miller (10.45) and Brigham (9.50) also tied for 17th in the Ron Jon Roxy Pro Junior. Both finished third in their respective rounds of the round of 16.
Sam Coffey of Santa Cruz finished tied for 13th in the Ron Jon Quiksilver Pro, a men’s QS 1000 event. He took fourth place in his round of 16 series with a total of 11.30. He finished behind Crosby Colapinto (12.55), Raiki Nishida (11.80) and Josh Burke (11.70) in his final run.
