QUEENSLAND could be just weeks away from securing the 2032 Olympics after the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee recommended putting Brisbane’s bid to a full vote in July.

AOC President John Coates said Brisbane 2032 must now be the subject of close scrutiny by IOC members during the July 20-21 session ahead of the start of the Tokyo Games for his “date with fate”.

According to an independent economic assessment released with the decision of the IOC executive, the Games would generate a total profit of $ 8.1 billion for Queensland and $ 17.61 billion for Australia and create 91,600 years of full-time equivalent jobs for Queensland.

“As we emerge from the economic setbacks of the Covid era, this is exactly the panacea Queensland and Australia need. Economically, socially and for the health and well-being of the state and beyond Mr. Coates, who was absent from the decision-making process at last night’s Board meeting and previous considerations on the Brisbane proposal.

“The AOC is excited about the potential of the Brisbane 2032 Games to inspire participation in sport for a generation of children, including Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders.

“Australia is a sport loving nation with an excellent track record in hosting major international events.

“It is important to note that Brisbane’s proposal is fully in line with the IOC’s New Norm program to make hosting the Olympic Games affordable and deliver lasting value to the communities that host them.

“The events would be organized in already existing, planned or modernized facilities. These planned and modernized facilities will bring lasting value to Queensland’s sporting and community legacy and will be used ahead of the Games.

“Most importantly for Queensland and Australia, the Games will energize the sporting environment which is so critical to the health and well-being of future generations.”

Mr Coates said Queensland had worked hard to get a vote.

“Frankly, the due diligence undertaken by the IOC Future Host Commission far exceeds that to which we were subjected with our bid for Sydney 2000,” said Mr Coates.

“But it is the members who must be convinced of the validity of our ambition to host the Olympic Summer Games for the third time. We have a rendezvous with fate.

“Since the start of the Targeted Dialogue phase in February this year, we have presented the Future IOC Host Commission with detailed responses to its questionnaire and organized forums where we have addressed the issues it has raised in relation to it. with the Brisbane proposal, ”Coates said. .

“We also presented to the 33 current international sports and discipline federations registered on the Olympic program under the aegis of the Association of International Summer Olympic Federations (ASOIF).

Announcing the decision to put Brisbane’s bid to a full vote, the IOC also released documents that reveal Queensland’s economy would receive a boost of $ 8 billion in the decades before and after the Games, as well than a whopping $ 3.6 billion “feel-good factor”. improved transportation, health and wellness changes brought about by the Games.

They also reveal the Games venues in unseen detail.

According to the venue master plan, Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Scenic Rim and Redland as well as the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast will host 28 Olympic sports at 32 venues, with 16 sports and disciplines within 3 miles of the central business district. from Brisbane.

Across the three areas of Greater Brisbane and the Coasts, there are seven site clusters or constituencies, which include ‘iconic, breathtaking seaside locations in the rural hinterland and city center’ .

In addition to the three SEQ zones, football preliminaries and quarter-final matches will be held in Toowoomba, Townsville and Cairns.

“This expands the opportunity and benefits of hosting the Games to major inland and coastal regional centers, while creating a statewide celebration of the Games,” the report said.

Along with the Gabba, the new Brisbane Arena would host swimming, Victoria Park and RNA could be used for equestrian events and Southbank for archery and 3v3 basketball.

Among other things, rowing would go to Wyaralong, sailing to Manly, kitesurfing to Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast and beach volleyball on the Gold Coast.

“Queensland is renowned for its unique and spectacular locations and is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations,” the report said.

Plans to show Queensland include outdoor sports that “will showcase the diverse natural environment, including beach volleyball on the spectacular Broadbeach, Gold Coast, staged triathlon against the backdrop of the city and the beaches. of Gold Coast, a road cycling marathon, walking and kitesurfing on the picturesque coastal strip of Alexandra Headland and the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, equestrian competition held in the heart of central Brisbane, archery and 3×3 basketball on the banks of the Brisbane River against the backdrop of the city, the iconic Brisbane Football Stadium, one of Australia’s first rectangular stadiums, the Wyaralong Dam, showcasing the spectacular back- Scenic Rim country, downtown Cairns and Townsville stadiums, gateways to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest World Heritage Area.

Details include $ 85 million for a spectacular opening and closing ceremonies expected to reach well outside the refurbished Gabba and $ 30 million for the torch relay across Queensland.

To earn the right to host the Games, Brisbane must convince a majority of the 100+ IOC members that Brisbane is the best fit for the 2032 event.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s representative on the Brisbane Olympics leadership group, Sunshine Coast MP Ted O’Brien said he was “thrilled” and they “had yet to cross the finish line”.

“On behalf of the Australian government, I thank the IOC Executive Board for its decision to authorize our candidacy before the next IOC session,” said Mr. O’Brien.

“I’m thrilled on one side but nervous on the other,” said Ted O’Brien. “I am optimistic but very cautious.

“We got through the second-to-last hurdle, but there’s one more left, and we’re taking absolutely nothing for granted.

“The International Olympic Committee has effectively reinvented its business model for hosting the Olympics, called ‘new standards’, and I can’t think of a more secure pair of hands than Queensland to host the biggest Games the world has ever. seen under this new model.

“We are happy, but dare not celebrate or try to indulge because we have not yet crossed the finish line.

“These Games represent a huge opportunity for all of Queensland, not just Brisbane and the South East; the profits will go to the far reaches of our great state, all corners of Queensland will be touched by the Olympic spirit.”
