A wide choice of different venues has proven to be one of the reasons Port Macquarie will host the Australian Surfing Championships in the region in August. The titles were last held in Hastings in 2013 before heading to Coffs Harbor (2014-2016) and more recently the Tweed Coast (2017-2019). Port Macquarie Surf School surfer and coach Wayne Hudson said it was a huge blow to the area. “The variety of different breaks they can use on any day is good,” he said. “In a 20-minute drive, you can take five different breaks that will work for every day, whatever the conditions. That will be one of the reasons he came back.” Mr. Hudson said you can go anywhere in Port Macquarie and find a semi-questionable wave. “The Tweed Coast has a lot of break points, but if the wind is northeasterly you have nothing,” he said. “It’s great for the community when you think of the sums of money that come in during the winter, so it’s a good time for the surf to be there for these accommodations and restaurants.
