PacMotor System Adds Dual Electric Motors to Existing Kayaks
Although most kayakers particularly like their boats because they are human powered, it is conceivable that an engine could help in some scenarios. And if there are already pre-motorized kayaks, the PacMotor system adds of them engines to an existing boat.
The setup consists of three parts: a twin engine assembly which is attached to the hull behind the cockpit, a hard-wired 16.8 V / 39 Ah lithium battery and a waterproof floating Bluetooth remote control.
Each motor is located at the end of a folding aluminum arm. These arms are pulled out of the water when no power assistance is required, and fold up to either side of the kayak when a boost is needed. They are then activated by the joystick remote control.
Because the two motors work independently, the system is able to turn the boat to one side or the other by varying their thrust relative to each other. It is even possible to turn the kayak in place, turning the motors in opposite directions. And as a safety measure, the motors will not work if the bluetooth signal from the remote control is not detected.
According to the Florida-based company PacMotor, one battery charge should be enough for more than three hours of use. The system has a top speed of 6 mph (10 km / h), it can be used in salt or fresh water, and the power unit is supposed to tip the scales at 9 lbs (4 kg) – there is no word on the weight of the battery.
It’s an intriguing setup, although we don’t know how compatible the power unit mounting system would be with different hull shapes and materials. Plus, while the website shows the battery tucked into a depression on the kayak’s aft deck, such a convenient storage location wouldn’t be available on many boats. Sticking the battery between your legs in the cockpit, or trying to cram it into the rear luggage compartment (which should stay open), would be quite inconvenient and maybe even a little dangerous.
Either way, if you want to get your own PacMotor system, you can sign up for updates through the company’s website. The expected retail price is US $ 799, although a 30% discount is offered to early birds.
