New kayak facility planned for Limerick
A KAYAK installation is planned on the banks of the River Shannon, the Limerick Leader can reveal.
The Limerick Kayaking Academy (LKA) is proposing the development of Shannon Fields Park in Corbally.
If granted permission from council planners, the facility will include a 250-square-meter hard fence and a prefabricated storage unit to facilitate kayaking on the river.
Academy secretary Garry Cosgrove said a municipal facility would be “the missing piece of the puzzle” for kayaking in Limerick, with the group having already secured grants and pledged to increase the balance afterward. .
“LKA, which is a 100 percent volunteer club, has a suite of qualified instructors and kayak equipment, who are not only willing but eager to give their time and years of experience. to increase participation in sport. The missing piece of the puzzle is the availability of a kayaking sport facility in Limerick, a facility that is available to all Limerick and any member of any community, a facility that is available within walking or cycling distance of the city of Limerick, ”he explained. .
Mr Cosgrove said talks with the council have been going on since November 2019, when they presented their plans.
“While initially various positions were considered, they very kindly offered the opportunity to apply for a building permit at Shannon Fields, Corbally, Limerick. On December 2, 2020, we had a pre-planning discussion with the Limerick City Planning Department and County Council on the new development proposal, ”he confirmed.
The academy carried out an environmental review given the proximity of the site to the special riverside conservation area.
And the planning request was formally submitted to the local authority on April 21.
If the project gets the green light – a decision must be made by mid-June – Mr Cosgrove predicts kayaking could be “Limerick’s next sporting success”.
LKA offers a year-round kayaking program, with around 30 club members each weekend enjoying the water.
The club also participates in national competitions and fun events, while raising funds for local charities, including over € 6,600 for Rape Crisis Mid-West last year.
