Late goal lifts DHS over River City
WEST SACRAMENTO — The Davis High women’s soccer team scored the first and only goal with just eight minutes left in regulation in their first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff game against River City on Friday.
After several shots on goal and simple misses from the net, Blue Devil Lauren Lemmo finally netted a thrilling goal to send No.9 Davis (7-2-5) into the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over River City High Raiders.
“It was awesome,” Davis High head coach Sara Stone said. “We were hoping to play a home game this year after finishing second in the league, but we didn’t, so it was a bit of a shock. We were on the road, so we took on that challenge as well.
Throughout the first half of the game, the Blue Devils kept the ball mostly on the Raiders’ side.
However, the River City keeper stopped Davis’ shots to keep the game scoreless.
Davis’ first shot came at the 3 minute mark from Rebecca Blum but was blocked by the River City keeper.
There were several other shots that didn’t reach the net due to the Raiders’ goalie’s strong defense.
Going into the second half scoreless, Davis was finally looking to score a goal after a first half filled with bad luck.
After two shots from Davis, Blue Devil Miya Alamares narrowly missed a goal in the 50th minute.
Davis High’s Grace Fabionar got a huge lead in the 67th minute from an Alamares pass but eventually the ball was saved by the River City keeper.
After three more missed shots, Lemmo got his clutch shot into the back of the net with just eight minutes left in the game.
“We had a lot of opportunities,” Stone said. “Overall the combat and the energy were where we needed them. We had a lot of chances in the last third and we finally took advantage of them.
Davis tried to secure an insurance goal but was again met with tenacity from the Raiders goalie.
In the end, the Blue Devils earned the shutout to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
Davis will face top seed Oak Ridge from El Dorado Hills in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Oak Ridge of the Sierra Foothill League beat No. 16 Stagg of Stockton 9-0 on Friday.
