Lake Reba receives new ADA accessible kayak launch
RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Newly installed at Lake Reba in Richmond is an ADA Accessible Kayak Launch Pad, one of the first in the state thanks to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The launch is also a double ramp which can be the courtesy ramp for those using John boats etc.
“They decided it was a big lake and we had enough traffic to set it up and they wanted it to be a pilot program to see if other lakes around Kentucky can use a dock like this.” said Department of Parks and Recreation director of recreation Erin Moore.
Moore says the boat launch is a great addition to the lake… giving the younger ones or those with mobility issues an easier way to enjoy the water.
“It’s pretty exciting to have something that’s the first of its kind in Kentucky and I think it’s really neat because Lake Reba has really come together to be a place of destination for people. who might have family members who use wheelchairs or who have mobility issues, ”said Moore.
She hopes the launch will bring more tourism.
“Having the kayak launch here that really brings these boats up promotes fishing, promotes being outside and being outside is really one of our biggest goals. Moore added.
She says the launch has already attracted many kayakers since its grand opening a week ago… Jay Rogers with Mike’s Hike and Bike Store in Richmond was thrilled to try it.
“I think it’s fantastic. It’s very easy to use very user friendly, it even has instructions and a QR code to find a video on how to use it, I think it’s a great addition here at Lake Reba, ”Rogers said.
This is not only beneficial for his kayaking businesses, but also for his business.
The shop rents kayaks. Rogers said hopes to see an increase in demand there as well.
“We are seeing an increase in kayaking every year, we have several places in the county to kayak, but with this access so close and so easy, I think we’re going to see an even bigger increase now,” Rogers said.
