KZN man dies after collapsing while surfing
A 30-year-old man has died after collapsing while surfing on Alkantstrand beach in Richards Bay.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), he was called to the scene at 8:58 a.m. Saturday after the man was rescued from the water.
NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the man was rescued by other surfers after he collapsed and passed out while surfing.
“The NSRI Richards Bay service team was activated following reports that bystanders from the CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] efforts were underway at Alkantstrand beach.
“Despite CPR’s intensive efforts, the man was declared dead,” Lambinon added.

His body was transported by the forensic services of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health while the police opened an investigation file.
The NSRI called on swimmers, bathers, boaters, paddlers, sailors, fishermen and coastal hikers to always have their emergency numbers on their phones.
