Football’s Bijan Robinson named pre-season Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Football running back Bijan Robinson was named the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday. Robinson highlighted a total of three players named to the preseason All-Big 12 football team as chosen by league media representatives.
Robinson was one of two unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 preseason squad and is joined by the wide receiver Xavier Digne and linebacker DeMarvion overcame.
Robinson is a third-year running back who has played in 19 games with 16 starts. The Tucson, Arizona native rushed for 1,830 yards on 281 carries (6.5 ypc) and scored 15 touchdowns, while catching 41 passes for 491 yards and six touchdowns. Last season, he was selected to the All-Big 12 First Team and received Honorable Mention as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, and was named a semi-finalist for the Maxwell Award, the Doak Walker Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. In 10 games, he rushed for 1,127 yards on 195 carries (5.8 ypc) and scored 11 touchdowns and had 26 receptions for 295 yards (11.3) and four touchdowns. Robinson ranked third in total conference touchdowns (15), fourth in points (9.0 ppg), sixth in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and all-purpose yards (1,422) and seventh in total points (90). His 142.20 all-purpose yards per game and 112.7 rushing yards per game ranked third in the conference and his 5.78 yards per carry was fifth. He topped 100 rushing yards six times during the season, highlighted by a 35-carry, 216 rushing yard (6.2 ypc) performance at TCU. Robinson is the first Longhorn nominated for the conference’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year award since quarterback Sam Ehlinger was selected ahead of the 2019 season.
Worthy, the 2021 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, had a banner year for the Longhorns last season, setting UT’s best freshman ratings for receptions (62), receiving yards (981) and the reception hits (12). The Fresno, Calif., native was the first freshman wide receiver from Texas to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors. He led the Big 12 in touchdowns and yards per game (81, 1), ranked third in receiving yards, fourth in receptions per game (5.2), fifth in receiving yards (15.82), sixth in receptions and seventh in total touchdowns ( 12). Worthy had four 100-yard receiving games, including a 261-yard performance against Oklahoma at the Red River Showdown in which he caught nine passes and had two touchdown receptions. His standout season earned him AP Freshman All-American honors and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year accolades. He was an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award semi-finalist, earned True Freshman All-American honors from ESPN and 247Sports, and was selected to the First Team Freshman All-American by The Athletic.
Overshown, a native of Arp, Texas, is a fifth-year linebacker who has played in 38 career games and made 22 starts. Last season, he played in and started 10 games, leading the Longhorns in total tackles (74) and solo tackles (38), while tied for the team lead in assists (36) and ranking second in tackles for loss (5.5). A 2021 Butkus Award semi-finalist, Overshown also recorded two sacks, recovered two fumbles, had two pass breakups and blocked a kick. He had at least eight tackles five times last season, including a career-high 13 (four solo) against Louisiana. The linebacker had an outstanding performance against Oklahoma during the Red River Showdown with eight tackles (five solo), two tackles for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery, two quarterback rushes and a blocked punt that set up a Texas touchdown.
