Deadly tearing currents will continue through Wednesday
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Florida – We had incredibly pleasant weather, but it was also the same beautiful weather that cost the lives of two. The past 11 days have had below normal afternoon temperatures, mainly in the low 80s. There has been little precipitation, lots of sunshine and a constant breeze to keep temperatures comfortable. It is these winds that have been constant, building the seas and the surf.
This is exactly the kind of weather that can be so deadly.
Keep the children in the shallow water, the waves will have a lot of energy, so stay close to the shore, they could easily knock you over. Remember that if you ever feel that the ocean is too much, it probably is, and you should stay in shallow water.
If you ever get caught in a tearing current where you can see yourself being pulled into the sea, DON’T PANIC!
Often times you could try to stay in this current, but the sand under your feet gives way and you end up floating in the water. At this point, try swimming UP or DOWN the beach. Often times you don’t need to swim very far on the beach, maybe only 20-30 feet and you can feel the rip current relax. Then try to stand, walk, or swim to shore.
Above all, don’t panic, even though the incoming waves may beat you.
