Plans for a Coastal Activity Center on Redcar’s waterfront have been approved by the Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Planning Committee.
The center could offer a range of exciting activities, sports and events including windsurfing, kitesurfing, horse riding, running, cycling and yoga.
It will be located in a unique shipping container village that can serve as a meeting place and informal base for sports clubs/organizations, community groups, school groups, entertainers, families or groups of friends.
It’s all part of the Redcar Town Deal, which is led by a group of industry experts, business leaders and community representatives, who have volunteered to support the regeneration of Redcar. Alongside Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, they have helped develop large-scale regeneration plans on how to make Redcar a vibrant and sustainable city.
Facilities at the Coastal Activity Center will also include a range of indoor and outdoor multi-purpose spaces, toilets, showers, lockers, an equipment store, changing rooms and parking. An accompanying catering offer will enhance the visitor experience.
The outdoor space adjacent to the container village will form a flexible event zone that could be used for a range of outdoor activities, such as exercise classes, sports and demonstrations. It could also provide space for an event village, from which competitions could start and end, including running festivals and triathlons.
Now that planning has been approved, work will begin on the site in the New Year.
Darren Winter, Chairman of the Redcar Town Board, said: “The Costal Activity Hub is an exciting project which, thanks to the work of the Council’s project team, has already secured support from British Triathlon and British Cycling. to organize competitive events. Alongside Redcar’s existing competitive sporting event offering, the Coastal Activity Centre, scheduled to open in the summer of 2023, will help establish Redcar as a competitive sporting destination city.
Cllr Chris Gallacher, Cabinet Member for Council’s Economic Development, said: ‘It’s great news that the Coastal Activity Center has been approved which will boost tourism and provide our residents with a fantastic facility to use. all year round with the family.
“We would like to thank everyone who participated in the consultation exercise before it moved into planning, and we look forward to further conversations as the project develops.
“Working in partnership with Redcar City Council, we have the opportunity to deliver a number of projects aimed at increasing tourism and providing economic opportunities for our residents, not just in Redcar, but across the district.”
