Campbell River Muay Thai Gym Hosts Internal Tournament – Campbell River Mirror

Future fighters of Heart and Soul Muay Thai had the chance to experience what it is like to show off their skills under the bright lights on Saturday, December 4th.
The gymnasium organized an internal tournament for 18 of its members.
Kru Sandra Bastian refereed the fights in the gymnasium ring, making sure everyone stayed safe and the matches didn’t turn into brawls. His partner, Chris Fair – dressed brilliantly in a black suit – acted as MC
A disco ball hung above the ring and rhythmic Muay Thai horns played on loudspeakers.
The event, dubbed Spar Wars, was a first of its kind for the club.
“I think everything went really well,” Bastian said.
“Everyone had fun and went through the whole routine of the day in combat – from the weigh-in to a ring name, to an exit song, to competing in an actual ring.”
Bastian was very impressed with the calm of the fighters.
“They all showed good technique, great sportsmanship, and they all looked so relaxed,” she said.
One of the goals of the event was to foster more camaraderie among the members.
“Everyone was helping each other, cheering on the person they just lost too and realizing that we are growing and improving together. “
Ish Hasan, who has been attending the gym for six months, said he signed up in order to push himself to train harder.
He called the experience “intense”.
“As soon as you get in the ring and notice the music, things change,” he said.
“You think about all the things you’ve learned and try to put them into practice, and you look at (your opponent) and you know he’s doing the same thing you’ve trained for.
“It all takes as much energy as kicking and punching. It is a mental effort that is triggered.
Bastian said she hopes to host more events in the future.
“We would like to eventually have real fight cards,” she said.
“Those days are coming.”
