Burris and stilts lead River Dragons past Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – Blake Burris was on fire and Adam Stilts ran the mound business on Sunday and led the Alton River Dragons to a 9-3 win over the Springfield Sliders in a Prospect League game in front of 1,211 fans on Robin’s Field Roberts.

Burris, an outfielder from Lewis and Clark and Edwardsville High School, had influence on two two-run homers, was 2-for-5 and had four RBIs for the River Dragons.

Adam Stilts, a right-hander from LCCC and Alton High, worked six innings, put out nine and walked one. He also helped himself to plate with an RBI brace.

Alton was playing his first road game of his inaugural season and raised his record to 2-1 this season. Springfield fell to 1-2 on the season.

The River Dragons will play at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, against the Cape Catfish.

The River Dragons took a 3-0 lead in the second set, added two more in the third and two in the fourth and won at the start.

River Dragons first baseman Zach Carden of Creighton University and Eden Prairie, Minnesota, had a pair of hits. River Dragons’ other RBIs came out of the bats of first baseman Clayton Dean with a double shortstop David Harris, who also doubled, and second baseman Jake Rivers, who also stole three bases.

Alton opened the game early. In the second inning, Zach Carden chose with one out, then scored when Burris made a homer.

After Harris pulled out for the second out, wide receiver Bryce Zupan of Bethalto walked in and then scored on a brace by Stilts in left field. to make 3-0.

In the third inning, Burris was up to the task again. His second home run of the match marked Alec Nigut ahead of him to bring the score to 5-0. Nigut had pulled one out.

After the Sliders a run in the third, Alton added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Rivers, who had made a single in right field, scored when Dean got there first on an error. Zupan then scored on a field player pick by Mike Hampton to make it 7-1.

The Sliders added a run down the fourth to make it 7-2. They beat the River Dragons 11-9

The River Dragons added just one run in the sixth when Rivers scored on a two-out double to left field by Dean.

At the top of the seventh, Alton’s Carden scored on a two-0ut double to right field by Harris.

The Sliders also scored a solo run in the eighth.
