75-year-old man kayaks 500 miles for charity at Russells Hall Hospital
A 75-year-old man kayakes along the Stourbridge Canal to raise money for Action Heart, a cardiovascular rehabilitation charity.
The Saunders use Action Heart, which has been based at Russells Hall Hospital for over a decade and wants to give something back – by kayaking 500 miles.
The retired teacher has been training and teaching kayaking since 1967, but this challenge is one of his most ambitious.
Les said: “Action Heart lost a lot of money due to the Covid pandemic so I wanted to challenge myself to support them.
“I have been kayaking a number of miles every week and have been doing it for three weeks now. I have reached 27 miles so I still have a long way to go.
“Initially I wanted to complete the challenge in 13 weeks, but now I hope to complete it by the end of August.
“From the bonded warehouse at Stourbridge to the upper locks at Stourton and back, it’s seven miles.
“I have a hard time kayaking on my own now as I need help getting on and off the kayak, so members of my canoe club, Stourbridge Canoe Club, accompany me on the trip. . ”
Action Heart is a cardio rehabilitation charity that helps people with heart or vascular problems.
